Kanab, UT
We picked Kanab over other cities because of the location to Zion! It is one of the closest cities to Zion and also has hikes with in the city (really within the backyard of where we are staying)!
We arrived on Saturday night after exploring Bryce and headed to Zion Sunday morning, making Kanab a great location for us!
The city of Kanab is very small and cute - not a TON to do, it is a city built based on tourism!
We did have a bit of trouble finding vegetarian items at first but then we found a vegetarian food truck, where we ordered one of everything and it was 100% worth it.
I now understand that not all deserts are hot all the time and in my mind they are (AND Ryan told me it would be warmer than Colorado..... he left out that it would only be warmer by a degree or two)..
On Friday night, we found a vegetarian restaurant that specializes in wood fired pizzas!
We got a great tip of where to go to check out stars that night. He told us that it is 3 lefts, including some dead ends, very descriptive..We never found any dead ends but there were so many stars and it was so dark! Kanab (and a lot of Kane County) have ordinances on the kind . They worked with other cities that have passed similar ordinances, as well as with the International Dark Sky Association, to understand the parameters needed for the ordinance to avoid wasted light. The ordinance set limits on brightness, require shielding, and to keep colors in the warm white part of the spectrum, at 3000 degrees Kelvin or lower. This effort was very worth it!
We are still learning how to capture the stars on Ryan's camera (and he wasn't the biggest fan of me stopping in the middle of the road for pictures but for context we probably saw 5 other cars during our hour and a half on these backroads)
Oh we also saw this huge bug this week, I know everyone is intrigued.
On to Capitol Reef and Canyonlands!
